Girl Talk announces Australian sideshows

The once biochemical engineer, Gregg Gillis is now the full-time dj known as Girl Talk. The Pittsburgh native (Go Detroit Redwings!) has taken the ‘mash-up’ genre by the scruff of the neck and is trying to rename it the 'girl-talk' genre.

On the back of his splendid fourth album 'Feed The Animals', Girl Talk is bouncing into Australia for the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival tour. The man has also locked in three sideshows for his most hardcore fans.

A Girl Talk live show is a completely new experience – Gillis hovers over a laptop and microphone (usually half-naked!!), surrounded on all sides by sweaty revellers, as a barrage of cheesy pop, punk, classic hip hop and rock bangs out the speakers. In other words – a concert made for dancing your friggin shoes off people!

It was here only a few years ago where he played the Revolver Upstairs in Melbourne. This time he plays at The Forum in Melbourne. Things have really progressed to another level. Nevertheless, expect mayhem.

Girl Talk gets his freak on at the following sideshows this silly season.

Girl Talk set to release 'Feed The Animals' soon

Girl Talk will apparently pull what some might be inclined to call "a Radiohead" with his new album 'Feed The Animals'. As he revealed to Billboard.com, his label Illegal Art will issue 'Feed the Animals' through its website in the coming weeks, offering up a digital copy of the highly-anticipated LP in a pay-what-you-want setup familiar to anyone who did that In Rainbows thing last fall. The label will follow it up with a CD release in the next few months, with the Wham City imprint handling the vinyl.

As for the music on 'Feed the Animals', Gillis describes the set as a "smoother" affair than 2006's frantic Night Ripper, with fewer quick transitions between source material and "more detailed" edits. Still, the album sports more than 300 samples over its 55-minute run time, culled from "more in-your-face classics" than its predecessor. Gillis had been testing out ideas for the record on the road over the last two years, though to complete it he spent 40 hours a week working up the disc for three solid months.

No word yet on a proper date for 'Feed the Animal's' release-- physically or otherwise-- but keeping an eye on the Illegal Art site is certainly the way to this party.

Girl Talk visits Australia for New Years!

Girl Talk is the pseudonym of DJ and remixer Greg Gillis. A Pittsburgh native who works as a biomedical research engineer during the day, Gillis channels his other creative energies into Girl Talk, whose sample-based dance tracks have made him the John Oswald of the mash-up generation: each of his songs are built on recognizable samples of recent hit singles, recontextualized into an entirely new piece. Not just a geeky studio boffin, Gillis is also a manic, intense live performer known for his high-speed exhortations into the mic and tendency to strip to his underwear on-stage while dancing circles around his laptop and DJ setup. Mix the likes of M.I.A, LCD Soundsystem, Kanye West with Oasis, Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters and add a splash of Madonna, Stevie Wonder, James Brown - you get Girl Talk. If you want to rock ur socks off, what better way to begin 2008 than with a night with Girl Talk.
