Triple J's Hottest 100 or should we say Predictable 100?

In case you weren't aware, or have no sense of time, yesterday was Australia day. So, happy Australia day! This also meant that it was Triple J's Hottest 100 day. As usual it was as predictable as Heath Ledger winning an Academy Award for 'The Dark Knight'. We at Music Universe didn't even bother listening to it this year. We thought we'd guess our top ten and see how we went after the program had finished. Boy were we close.

Kings of Leon won with 'Sex on Fire'. Too easy. Great song. But just obvious. MGMT made it into the top five twice (as did KOL). We predicted that. The Presets made it twice. We predicted that too. Empire of The Sun made it in and we thanked god for that. The others that rounded out the top ten were mildly predictable, but only because their had to be some hip-hop involved (Pez and Drapht). Don't get us wrong, we love all the bands in the top ten, we write about theem all the time, we're just saying that Triple J and their teenie boppers target audience are bland, predictable, monotonous and boring.

There were some surprises in this year's list. But none more so than TV On The Radio not getting one single song in the top 100. Their album, 'Dear Science', has been rated as one of the best albums of the year by almost everyone involved in music. How did they not get a mention? Just pure bewilderment. Pathetic by triple j and their fans too.

Muse win Triple J Hottest 100

Triple J has broken ranks this year to award none-Aussie act Muse the coveted number one spot on the Triple J Hottest 100.

The manually placed top spot has traditional been given to an Australian act to mark Australia Day (January 26) but in a change of mood at the J's, Muse 'Knights Of Cydonia' beat Silverchair's 'Straight Lines' to come in at number one.

Other Australian acts in the Top 10 were John Butler Trio, Faker and The Panics.

Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters, Cold War Kids, Daft Punk and Soko rounded out the Top 10.

Muse also had the No. 58 song with 'Invincible'. Silverchair made No. 30 with 'If You Keep Losing Sleep' and No. 80 with 'Reflections of a Sound'.

In a huge disappointment for the staff of Music Universe, Radiohead only came in once at number 94, Interpol once at 98, QOTSA at 89, Arcade Fire at 81 and Klaxons at 54. Considering these disappointments, the staff are on the verge of boycotting next year's countdown.

Triple J Hottest 100 on Australia Day!!

The HOTTEST 100 COUNTDOWN is back again and will be broadcasted on Triple J on Saturday Jan 26 (Australia Day).

Countdown broadcast live around Australia starts at 10AM AEST on the radio (8AM in WA, 9AM QLD, 9:30AM SA and NT). More than 700,000 votes have been counted, making it the biggest Hottest 100 in history.

You'll also be able to see the top ten countdown replayed that night on ABC 2 at 8:30 pm.

Unfortunately voting has now closed, but its always fun to try and pick the top 10 with your mates on the day. It's a tough year to pick the winner, but the team at Music universe will be tuning in all day listening in anticipation of who will take out the gong in 2007!!

Young & Restless win triple j's Unearthed award

The staff are Music Universe would like to publicly congratulate Young & Restless for winning the triple j inaugural 'Unearthed' award. Without a doubt, Y&R have been the find of the year amongst the new artists/bands emerging from below the surface. 2008 surely looks to be like a big year for the crew from Canberra, now based in Melbourne. Hopefully, they can head into international waters asap. Everyone should have a copy of Young & Restless' self-titled album in their hands.

The Panics win The J Award 2007

Well, I've said it before and I'll say it again.........Jase Knows Music.

As a true, never-listens-to-anything-else, triple j fan, Jase Knows Music has been tuning in all year and hearing all about the 2007 J Awards. Nominations have been flowing, albums have been featurig and songs have been airing all year. Of the 13 fantastic nominations this year, Jase Knows Music took a punt and believed that The Panic's album, Cruel Guards, would win this years title.

The Panics take over the J Award from the Hilltop Hoods, who won it last year for their album 'The Hard Road'. The J Award is for an album of outstanding achievement as an Australian musical work of art - for its creativity, innovation, musicianship and contribution to Australian music. The judging panel is made up of triple j hosts and producers. The Panics ' Cruel Guards' is in Jase Knows Music's top 25 albums for 2007 (coming soon - stay tuned) and rightfully deserves the accolades it receives from the music industry.
