Austin City Limits announces lineup

There's only four festivals in the United States that people should attend: Lollapalooza, Coachella, SXSW and Austin City Limits. We've already talked about the previous three, now let's talk about the Austin City Limits festival.

The lineup is once again RIDICULOUS. It includes the likes of big draw cards Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Beastie Boys, Kings of Leon, Ben Harper, and Sonic Youth. It also boasts the likes of indie faves Lily Allen, Arctic Monkeys, The Decemberists, Andrew Bird, Girl Talk, Phoenix, The Walkmen, !!! and Bon Iver. The lineup also showcases the new kids on the block such as The Dead Weather (Jack White new side project), Grizzly Bear, Passion Pit, Dan Auerbach (half of Black Keys), Blitzen Trapper, School of Seven Bells, The Dodos and even the hip hop master, Mos Def.

Again, if you're over in the States or planning a trip soon, make sure you get your ass down to Austin, Texas!!

ALBUM REVIEW: Red Light Company - 'Fine Fascination'

Every time I look at the cover of the debut album from Red Light Company, I think of one of my contributors, Dan 'Core'. Not to say I don't think about him at other times. Actually I think about him a lot and his whereabouts because it seems he has gone all John Lennon on me and is still away on his 'lost weekend'. Anyhow, I think about how amazing the resemblance is between Dan 'Core and his delightful, beautiful girlfriend, and the two innocent, virgin-like naked kids about to do the dirty on the 'Fine Fascination' album cover. It's uncanny. Seriously.

Now, as for the actual music and sound of the album itself, we at Music Universe believe this could be one of the finer debut albums to come out for 2009. Red Light Company are a band based in London, but all of its members (five in total) come from various parts of the world. Their sound has had them compared to the likes of other Arena-rock bands such as Coldplay, Arcade Fire, The Killers and Editors.

From the very first track of the album you already feel like this could be a very enjoyable album. Opening track 'Words of Spectacular' just oozes The Darkness like stadium sound. Big drums, 80s synthesizers and a catchy chorus "all of this time ive been waiting dark nights what for" make for a great opening. Next track 'Scheme Eugene' honestly sounds like The Polyphonic Spree have taken over the vocals for a moment and the reference to band Broken Social Scene makes it extra sweet. 'Arts and Crafts' is like combining Snow Patrol with Australian band Eskimo Joe. Again, a yet another really addictive, sweet-as-honey sounding song which should make good on all the airwaves. 'With Lights Out' and 'New Jersey Television' are again very enjoyable listens, much like The Killers have been over the past few years.

We're now just past the half-way mark on the album and we're not bored yet. We're certainly not 'oh my god im convulsing' excited by what's to come, but we're still interested. 'The Architect' has Arcade Fire's sound painted all over it. Despite the similarities and some might say it's a rip off, we at Music Universe love it. Again, very addictive. 'Meccano' again brings back the sounds of the stadium-rock with chances of getting the crowd to get involved in a mass sing-a-long with "crying out loud the weekend is over, push it out the smiles to uncover". Jimmy Eat World also continues to flick through the mind as we listen to the song more and more. After talking about how similar Red Light Company's sound is to other bands, its fitting that the next song on the album is 'When Everyone is Everybody Else'. It's probably the worst, and most over-the-top song on the album unfortunately. 'The Alamo' is one of those songs that if it were on the album earlier, we would probably appreciate it more. The drums on the final song on the album, 'First We Land', appear non-existent and it's actually a really nice way to end things. You can just see and hear the audience's final participation with the raising of their hands and clapping.

In summation, this debut album is a very listenable, catchy album. The recognisable sounds that stem from previous stadium sounding bands are obvious, but you know what....they still sound good. This band have made a very good debut album which we're sure will make you sit back and listen to it over and over and over again.

Vampire Weekend to release new album in September?

Vampire Weekend have finished writing their lyrics and are now working on their sound for their new album, expected to be released this September.

According to Pitchfork, the boys are currently in their Brooklyn studio putting together the music for their sophomore LP. When asked what their sound is going to be like, frontman Ezra Koenig said "It's definitely going to be a recognizably Vampire Weekend sound, but there are going to be new sounds. We're trying to challenge ourselves not to use the same bag of tricks that we used on the first album-- different instruments, stuff like that."

Keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij is once again producing the album.

Newish song 'White Sky' has been circulating the net for a while now, played at a couple of recent gigs and even performed live on the Jimmy Kimmel show. However, whether it appears on their new album or not is yet to be confirmed. Music Universe don't think the song is anything near their best, but have no doubt that their new albums will be kick-ass.

Passion Pit release first official single 'The Reeling'

We here at Music Universe have mentioned it a few times, but we thought we'd reiterate it once more. Passion Pit will be the MGMT of 2009. You heard it here first.

Passion Pit just released 'The Reeling', their first official single off their highly anticipated debut album 'Manners' (due May 19th).

Passion Pit first came onto the indie scene last year with their kick-ass EP 'Chunk of Change'. They're developed a ridiculous amount of internet hype ever since its release and the singles they've released off 'Chunk of Change' including 'Sleepyhead', 'Smile Upon Me' and 'I've Got Your Number' are just sublime.

If you love your electro-pop, synth-jam goodness, and are looking for your MGMT for 2009, then Passion Pit is the band for you.

Frand Ferdinand gets dub with 'Blood'

Franz Ferdinand are set to release their second album of 2009. The Scottish rock outfit has recorded a dub version of their previously released album.

'Tonight: Franz Ferdinand', the group's previous album, already had the right ingredients for the album to be dubbed. Producer, Dan Carey, has worked with dub artists such as Lee "Scratch" Perry and Mad Professor in the past.

Speaking to Billboard in November 2008, lead singer Alex Kapranos described Carey as having "a different dynamic than other producers." "I think with anything, it has to be a collaboration and we find ourselves bouncing off one another rather well," Kapranos said of the group's work with Carey. "He's coming from that Jamaican perspective -- there's much more space; the bass guitar leads a lot more on this record than anything else."

Titled "Blood," the album will be released June 1 through Domino.

Lollapalooza 2009 is ridic

Guys, we thought we'd write another piece in the 'must attend once before you die' music festivals series. This time we want to talk about Lollapalooza.

Lollapalooza was conceived and created in 1991 by Perry Farrell (lead singer of Jane's Addiction). It finished in 1997, but reemerged and revived itself in 2003. It's held in Grant Park, Chicago, in the United fking States and it attracts around 65,000 people over three days. This year it's held on August 7th-9th.

The lineup this year boasts the likes of Depeche Mode, Tool, The Killers, Jane's Addiction (of course), Beastie Boys, Kings of Leon, Lou Reed, Ben Harper, Snoop Dogg, Tv On The Radio, Vampire Weekend.........

phew.......needed a breath

......The Decemberists, Neko Case, Animal Collective, Band of Horses, Of Montreal, Arctic Monkeys, Fleet Foxes, Kaiser Chiefs, Crystal Castles, Bon Iver

......deep breath

.....Santigold, Cold War Kids, Deerhunter, Lykke Li, Peter Bjorn and John, Gomez, Glasvegas, Passion Pit, Ra Ra Riot, Friendly Fires, Simian Mobile Disco, Hercules and Love Affair, Rye Rye, No Age and sooooooooooo many more!

The more and more we look over this year's lineup, the more and more we think about stabbing ourselves in the neck because we can't get over there. Dam you Perry!

Splendour in The Grass 2009 - First announcement

Yes folks, its that time of the year again already. It's Splendour time baby!

The team from the Splendour in The Grass festival have just released their first announcement on who's going to be performing at this year's show. Before we get to the names however, we at Music Universe would like to add our two cents in.

MU's two cents: Our gut instinct when we were told about the lineup was......meh. Yes it has a couple of huge headliners, but there's also a few acts that normally would be considered headliners but because they've played in Australia a number of times or recently it just makes the lineup a little.......meh. There was always going to be the standard and obvious 'let's play at every festival' aussie contingent, but on the flip side there's also a couple of new up n comers (which in our eyes are very important) that round out the first announcement.

So, to the lineup........semi, soft drumroll please I guess......

Main headliners announced so far are Jane's Addiction and The Flaming Lips. Solid headliners for any festival no matter where in the world. Bloc Party and MGMT return to play their only Australian shows at the festival. Been there, done that. Next!

Old schoolers and celebrating their 30th anniversary, The Specials, are making there way over too. Along the same theme of 'old schoolers' but with an Australian flavour to it, Grinspoon will make yet another appearance to try and rev the crowd up. The kings of revving the crowd and token hip-hop act, The Hilltop Hoods, will be reemerging. Also, after riding their wave of success off the back of their stunning debut, Midnight Juggernauts will be venturing out to hopefully play some new tunes.

As for the up n comers that we at Music Universe are very interested in seeing, the likes of Friendly Fires, White Lies, The Gutter Twins and Manchester Orchestra will be making their first appearances in the country. Rounding out the announcement are the standard stock boring Australian bands like Augie March, Bob Evans, Little Birdy, Birds of Tokyo and Yves Klein Blue. The singer/songwriter's list looks dull with Sarah Blasko, Josh Pyke and Kram wasting space on the schedule.

Anyway, here's hoping the second announcement brings out the big guns. Please.

SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 2009 – 1ST LINEUP

Mew to release new album in June

Danish alt-rockers Mew, who broke through two years ago with the release of their deliciously good third album 'And the Glass Handed Kites', have wrapped sessions on their fourth studio album.

Recorded and mixed primarily in New York, the as yet untitled album is on target for a June 2009 release.

According to singer Jonas Bjerre, the biggest change for Mew this time around was keeping their recording timeline down to a minimum. "We were in agreement when we started writing this record, promising ourselves, 'This is not going to take three years to make. We need to work faster,'" Bjerre told Spin Magazine.

The band also moved away from the continuous manner in which 'Kites' was mixed, where one song basically bled seamlessly into the next. "The last record we did was like one long thing, and I love that about it," Bjerre says. "We didn’t want to do that again, we wanted to have separate songs. I think it’s like a counter reaction to what we did last time."

Mew are playing at the Summersonic Festival in Japan come August time. Does this mean they might make their debut appearance in Australia for Splendour? Let's hope that we will see them in Australia sometime soon.

Simon and Garfunkel to tour Australia after 25 years!!

New York fans were treated to something special recently when Simon and Garfunkel made a surprise three-song performance at New York’s Beacon Theatre. Today Australian and New Zealand fans are getting something even more special, a national tour.

Simon & Garfunkel, ranked among the greatest artists of all time, are to tour for eight concerts in June.

Having not visited Australia for more than 25 years, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel last toured Australia and New Zealand in 1983 with their 'Summer Evening' Tour. They are returning with their 'Old Friends In Concert' Tour, which wowed US and European audiences back in 2004, (which was the last time the duo toured together.

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel have been friends and harmonising together for more than 50 years. They made songs that when you hear them it brings either a smile to the face or a tear tothe eye. Their songs are timeless. Songs including 'The Sound of Silence', 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', 'Mrs. Robinson', 'Homeward Bound', 'Cecilia' and 'A Hazy Shade of Winter' to name just some as examples of their legendary status. Like all long relationships, they have had there share of fights, break-ups and even years of not talking to each other. But at the ripe age of 67 years, the classic couple are enjoying one another yet again.

As a duo, Simon & Garfunkel have sold more than 40 million albums in the U.S. alone; received five Grammy Awards - including the 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award - and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.

TOUR DATES:
Wed 17 June - Brisbane Entertainment Centre
Sat 20 and Sun 21 June - Acer Arena, Sydney
Thu 25 and Fri 26 June - Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne
Tue 30 June - Adelaide Entertainment Centre
Thu 2 July - Burswood Dome, Perth

Japan's Fuji Rock & Summersonic Festivals = Splendour in the Grass?

Remember how we said we would talk about a few of the international festivals happening this year? Well, another two we'd like to mention is the Fuji Rock Festival and Summersonic Festival. Not only are they Japan's best and only festivals, but they could also give us a few clues as to who could come down for Splendour in the Grass as the two festivals occur within a few days of each other.

The lineup for this years Fuji Rock festival (July 24th-26th) includes acts such as Animal Collective, Ben Harper and The Relentless 7, Diplo, Easy Star All Stars, Franz Ferdinand, Jeff Lang, The Killers, m83, Oasis, Peaches, Polysics, Public Enemy, Royksopp, Simian Mobile Disco, Weezer and many many more.

A week post Splendour is the Summersonic festival held in Japan too (Aug 7th-9th). Now this is also a monster festival which never seems to have a disappointing lineup. It also gives better idea for Splendour's lineup as it doesnt clash with the festival, unlike Fuji does. This year they have got the likes of Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, Nine Inch Nails, The Flaming Lips, Aphex Twin, CSS, Klaxons, Mogwai, Placebo, Sonic Youth, Soulwax, Girl Talk, Mando Diao, Matisyahu, Metronomy, Mew, Mercury Rev, N.A.S.A, Red Light Company and a stupid amount more.

Now, for those trying to calculate who could come to Splendour from these lineups, well Music Universe have already done it for you. Ben Harper, Easy Star All Stars, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, m83 and Simian Mobile Disco can almost be written off from the lineup from Fuji. Nine inch Nails, Flaming Lips, CSS, Klaxons, The Ting Tings, Phoenix, Girl Talk and possibly Mercury Rev can be erased from the Summersonic lineup.

So, there's a huge huge chance that this years Splendour (held over the July 25th-26th weekend) could include Oasis, Placebo, Sonic Youth, Weezer, Royksopp, Phoenix, Peaches and who knows who else. For us at Music Universe, we will pray twice a day for Mew to make their first appearance in Australia.

By the way, quick congratulations goes out to Tame Impala and Temper Trap for getting onto the Summersonic festival bill. Nice one!
