ALBUM REVIEW: The XX - 'XX'

The XX are fittingly four precocious 20 year olds (xx in roman numerals) from south west London. A band made up of two boys and two girls – who write bleakly minimal songs that are darkly romantic. We at Music Universe are a little upset that we didn't predict or foresee this band as one to watch out for in 2009.

Simply titled 'XX', the band's 2009 debut album (which was produced by the band themselves) creates such a delicate atmosphere that one can't help but fall in love straight away. On first listen, it's apparent that the mix of the male and female vocals (similar to The Kills) actually really complement each other quite nicely. It's a simple yet creatively satisfying album which leaves one captivated and wanting to play it again and again. We don't want to single out any tracks because it's the kind of album that requires you to listen to it from start to finish and not skip a single song. Have we mentioned how breathtaking the album is?

We actually can't contain our excitement. The XX have made an album that would actually make you want to walk around the city aimlessly on a rainy, gloomy day. It’s strange that such a traditional set-up (drums, bass, keys, guitars, voices) has resulted in one of 2009’s most unique debuts. We would be more than happy to shelve this melancholic, intimate and yet strangely eerie album next to the likes of Chairlift, Mazzy Star and Stars.

Do yourselves a favour and get on board The XX bandwagon. Buy the album, you won't regret it.
