Kings of Leon tour postponed?

The Kings of Leon’s UK tour is reportedly in doubt because the band are rowing over singer Caleb Followill’s heavy drinking.

The Kings came to blows after frontman, Caleb, went on an excessive binge and now the other three members, brothers Nathan and Jared and cousin Matthew are refusing to speak to him.

A source said: 'The others have warned Caleb over and over again that they weren’t happy about his drinking. 'The lads have always fought but they usually sort it out the next morning. Things are completely different this time.

'The record label is deeply concerned that if they don’t sort out their differences the tour won’t go ahead.'

Bassist Jared recently revealed the band’s drunken fights can get so bad their security guards have to separate them. Jared, 23, said: 'We wouldn’t have security guards if it wasn’t for Caleb. More than anything they protect us from each other.

'The only time we fight is when Caleb’s drunker than he’s ever been, so it’s not really him. He wakes up and doesn’t remember any of it.'

Caleb has admitted he gets so wasted he turns into his drunken alter-ego 'The Rooster’. He said: 'I hate it man, whenever the word 'Rooster’ is involved, you can wake me up and I think life is great and have zero memory of what happened.'

Hopefully this all gets sorted out soon and they fulfill their fans' dreams and appear next year for their 'Only By The Night' stadium tour of Australia.

The Killers want to be bigger than U2

The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers has said the band are ready to usurp U2 as the biggest rock group in the world.

Flowers said that his “drive bordering on obsession” meant the group wouldn't rest until they had reached their goal.

"U2 are unbelievable, but they're getting old," Flowers said. "It feels like it's time."

He added: “We wanna see where this will take us. It doesn't make any sense to place restrictions.

“We write these songs as human beings, and they affect us, and we put them out there in the hope that they will affect other human beings, that they transcend any limitations."

The Killers just released their 3rd studio album 'Day & Age' produced by Stuart Price aka electro dj Jacques Lu Cont. Starting with the first single 'Human' you can already tell his clearly had an influence on the album. Music Universe seriosuly rates this album, but you probably need to listen to it from start to finish at least ten times in a row. Could make a mention in the upcoming 'Best of 2008' list.

Muse begin working on 5th album

Muse have announced today that they have already started work on their fifth studio album.

Bassist Chris Wolstenholme confirmed that the super-massive trio had already begun working on the follow-up to the 2006 outstanding album "Black Holes and Revelations".

Posting on the official Muse website forum, he told fans: "It would be nice to have the album out in the second half of next year but we have not set ourselves any targets. It is more important for us to make the best album we have made to date, and if that means it comes out in 2010 then we don't mind."

Frontman Matt Bellamy added that the new album may also feature the "hardest song" he has ever written.

Bellamy said: "There is a new song in three parts, more of a symphony than a song, which I have been working on sporadically for many years. I have been arranging the orchestral elements myself, which is taking a long time. It should hopefully make the next album as the final three tracks."

The band also joked that they were enjoying their new titles after being given Honorary Doctorate of Arts by the University of Plymouth in September.

REVIEW: Bloc Party (Festival Hall, Melbourne Nov. 21st)

Based on how quickly tickets for Bloc Party’s two Melbourne concerts were snapped up, the band’s popularity has clearly grown since 2005’s debut 'Silent Alarm'. One might be tempted to suggest that this newfound popularity is largely the result of their more hook-oriented second album, 'A Weekend In The City', than the relatively abrasive and disjointed 'Intimacy', which the band are currently promoting. Still, the mix of indie kids and miscellaneous chancers looking for kicks after work, came to enjoy themselves. It seemed that not even the band’s recent fondness for tuneless pseudo-dance numbers could deter them from having a good night out.

Despite being true to the variety of the band’s back catalogue, the chosen set list veered awkwardly between the propulsive ('Hunting For Witches', 'Helicopter'), the mid-tempo ('Ion Square', 'Sunday') and the aforementioned ‘dancier’ tracks, making it difficult for any sort of momentum to be generated. Not helping matters was a sound (typical of festival hall) that blunted the band’s attack, muddying what should have been show-stoppers. Disappointingly 'Banquet' came and went without leaving any real impact.

So, it was left to 'Silent Alarm' standouts 'So Here We Are' and 'This Modern Love' to restore faith in proceedings. Elegantly written and performed sublimely, they invited mass sing-alongs from those near the front of the stage, whilst providing brief moments of respite for those in the stands. We left the concert knowing it was a good start to the beginning of yet another gloomy weekend in the city.

Blur set to get back in the studio together

Having dropped many hints in the past, Damon Albarn has now announced that his former band Blur will be heading into rehearsals again. The former frontman dropped the news before a performance of his opera 'Monkey: Journey To The West' at London’s BBC Radio Theatre. Also, in even more amazing news, guitarist Graham Coxon will also partake in the rehearsals.

When asked if Blur will play any shows in 2009, Albarn answered “Blur are certainly going to rehearse and see if we’re into it.” It's nothing to get too hyped over, but it's a start. Maybe the presence of Coxon, who played a formative part in Blur’s first six albums, will make the difference as he has stated in the past that he will never reform with Blur. Cross your fingers that they get "into it!"

Justice release live CD/DVD 'A Cross The Universe'

Wiked French electronic duo Justice will be releasing their highly anticipated live album and tour documentary 'A Cross The Universe' through an exclusive iTunes world premiere today, November 25th. This is also a first for iTunes because they have never offered a long form music video, not to mention video being bundled with an audio release. Atlantic Records will make the CD+DVD available December 9th across the universe.

Filmed over the course of Justice's second tour of the USA, the documentary was created by multi-award winning directors Romain Gavras and So-Me. The two of them recorded virtually every second of the tour and cut footage of a three week tour into a feature-length film. 'A Cross The Universe' boasts not only the marvels of Justice's live show with the CD, but it the DVD allows for glimpses of sex, drugs and rock & roll and there’s even a Las Vegas wedding, nuts tour manager with a gun and a bottle being smashed over a crazed fan’s head! It's Justice to a cup of tea.

No Age and Jay Reatard team up for shows

Two of Laneway Festival’s most exciting bookings are teaming up together for sideshows in Sydney and Melbourne. Both Jay Reatard and No Age have released some cutting egde albums recently and apparently both offer raging live shows.

No Age’s 'Nouns' is a certain contender to make Music Universe's Best Albums of 2008 list. They’ve also made a habit of playing really warped gigs ranging from rallying crowds on the banks of Los Angeles River, one in an Ethiopian restaurant and another amongst the books at the Los Angeles Central Library.

Don't you worry about one-man sensation Jay Reatard for he is on par with them. He appeared earlier this year at Golden Plains and for all those that were there, only the word 'jealous' comes to mind. Apparently his manic live show requires you to give your undivided attention for 100% of his time, but trust, it's worth it. Watch a live video of Jay Reatard's 'My Shadow' here.

No Age and Jay Reatard take time out from the Laneway Festival tour to play these shows in January. Tickets on sale Friday 28 November.

Thursday 29 January – The Gaelic Club, Sydney
Friday 30 January – The Corner Hotel, Melbourne

Coldplay announce Australian tour for 2009

*I just had to put this picture of Coldplay in today. I love how they each look like they're posing for a different camera or these are the Coldplay models from the Madame Tussad's Wax Museum.

After much speculation and waiting, music giants Coldplay is returning here in late February for a run of stadium ala Kings of Leonesque shows.

Arguably the biggest band in the world right now, released the Brian Eno-produced 'Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends' earlier this year and what an album it was. More than likely it will feature in Music Universe's Best Albums of 2008 list (coming soon!!), but it's their repertoire of mesmerising hits that will make this tour one not to miss. On each visit to Australia, Coldplay has been met with arms wide open by their adoring fans. Wisely, for their 2009 tour they’ve announced back to back nights in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. The fans in Adelaide will not be pleased. Hopefully either they will announce your city soon or we expect Chris Martin will receive emails asking for him to pay for some airfares.

Coldplay play the following shows in early 2009.

Tickets on sale Thursday 4 December.

Fri 27 February – Burswood Dome, Perth
Tue 3 & Wed 4 March – Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne
Sun 8 & Mon 9 March – Brisbane Entertainment Centre
Wed 11 & Thu 12 March – Acer Arena, Sydney

Pyramid Rock adds The Panics

If you remember a few days ago we announced that The Vines have cancelled all scheduled tour commitments including their spot at Pyramid Rock Festival. Well that slot has now been filled by triple j 'album of the year' winners - The Panics.

The Perth lads are currently on the road for their last theatre shows of 2008, still living off their wide-reaching success of 'Cruel Guards'. They reasserted their festival poweress at Splendour In The Grass in August, apparently getting one of the weekend’s strongest receptions. Check out their video here. We can only expect the same level of awesomeness at Pyramid Rock.

Pyramid Rock festival is on at Phillip Island from 29th Dec. - 1st Jan.

The Panics will be joining the likes of The Living End, The Black Keys, Cut Copy, Fat Freddy's Drop, Midnight Juggernauts, Digitalism, Birds of Tokyo, Muph and Plutonic, Ladyhawke, Bob Evans, Frightened Rabbit, The Mess Hall and so many more goodies.

The man last visited Australia in 2007 and his return visit is sure to be another memorable one. We at Music Universe also have a sneaking suspicion looking at his dates, that he could be on the 3rd Big Day Out announcement too.

Ryan and The Cardinals play the following shows in January.

Trentemoeller pulls out of Field Day

Danish artist Trentemoller has pulled out of Field Day 2009, held by Fuzzy on New Years Day in Sydney. “Serious personal issues” was the reason given. Field Day was earlier rocked when Roger Sanchez announced he was double booked, and had to play a NYE show in Germany.

Field Day has added to its bill Eric Prydz, US nu-ravers Walter Meego, Ladyhawke, Germany’s Oliver Huntemann, the Bag Raiders live, JD Samson of Le Tigre, Mission Control and Canyons.

They will all join Santogold, Digitalism, Jamie Lidell, Late of The Pier and Adam Freeland.

Blink 182 planning a comeback?

Former singer and lead guitarist of Blink 182, Mark Hoppus, has revealed that a possible Blink 182 reunion is not out of the question.

Writing on his official site, himynameismark.com, the former singer of the band informs fans that he recently got back in touch with both Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker.

“In the midst of everything else that has happened lately [Travis Barker escaped death from a plane accident recently], Tom, Travis, and I have all spoken together. First through a number of phone calls, and then a couple of weeks ago we all hung out for a few hours,” says Hoppus.

“We’re just reconnecting as friends after four years of not talking.”

Blink 182 announced their “indefinite hiatus” in early 2005.

“Obviously the first question for a lot of people will be ‘Does this mean a Blink-182 reunion?’ The answer is none of us know,” Hoppus continues.

“Right now it’s just good for the three of us to see one another, reconnect, and let the past be the past.”

“The events of the past two months supersede everything that happened before. Life is too short.”

Before Blink 182 broke up, five albums had been made under their name. After their break through album "Dude Ranch" back in 1997, Trav Barker replaced Scott Raynor on drums and the newly formed Blink 182 went on to produce "Enema of the State", "Take Off Your Pants and Jacket" and "Blink 182". They've sold millions of albums worldwide and built a huge fanbase. Let's just say, if they did return back to the music scene, they would get a great reception.

The Hold Steady announce sideshows

The 2009 lineup for the St Jerome's laneway festival was announced a few weeks ago now, but we rex most people haven't come down from the high they experienced yet. Anyway, to add to the excitement machine, a couple of the bands have announced sideshows.

Most notably for the Music Universe staff is the announcement of The Hold Steady's sideshows. The brooklyn based boys have released four albums this century, each one getting better and better. 2008's 'Stay Positive' probably became their most widely acclaimed album yet. We look forward to seeing them both at the festival and their own gigs.

It’s been a long six years since Stereolab’s last visit, but they’re still in fine stead. The band’s ninth album, 'Chemical Chords', was released in August to glowing reviews, blending Motown, doo-wop and synth-pop into a cohesive whole. They'll be hitting a couple of cities with intimate gigs.

Canadian trio Born Ruffians also delivered one of 2008’s best albums with 'Red, Yellow & Blue' and their live show is nothing short of energy packed too.

Stereolab sideshows

Snow Patrol play 'intimate' Sydney show

Snow Patrol will play a 'special intimate performance' at the Metro Theatre in Sydney this Wednesday (19th) during a speedy visit to promote their album 'A Hundred Million Suns'.

Snow Patrol sold out their stadium shows in Australia the last time they were here so it's a given that tickets are likely to sell out straight away when they go on sale at 9am on Tuesday November 18 (tomorrow). Tickets are only available via the Metro Theatre.

So make sure you're on the phone or internet bright and early tomorrow morning. Alternatively, you can buy tickets from the Metro Theatre box office in person. Expect many campers. Don't worry though, knowing how much they love Australia (who doesn't??), they will be returning sometime next year.

The Vines cancel shows

Following a blow to Perth fans over the weekend, whereby Vine's lead singer Craig Nicholls’ flight related anxiety had recurred and therefore had to cancel their gig,
an announcement has just come through informing us that The Vines have cancelled all future shows. These include their Japanese tour, Homebake, Pyramid Rock or the Big Day Out. This is all due to a rapid deterioration in Nicholls’ mental condition which will require help over an extended period of time.

“On behalf of The Vines we would like to extend our sincerest apologies to those of you who have bought tickets to see us perform and will not get to do so” said Hamish. “We are all absolutely devastated that we’ve been forced to cancel all upcoming shows as there’s nothing we love more than playing on stage before an enthusiastic audience. We ask for your understanding in this situation”

Aside from sincere apologies from the rest of the band, and thanks to management and promoters for their understanding, The final word on the matter is a plea from Nicholls’ family that sensitivity be shown at this difficult time, and that this statement be accepted as their only comment.

Bluesfest 2009 announces first lineup

Following last year's successful relocation, Bluesfest 2009 will celebrate its 20th birthday once again at the spacious festival and camping site of Belongil Fields. The event's permanent new home at Tyagarah Tee Tree Farm, 10 minutes north of Byron Bay is continuing with planning and development and will host Bluesfest in future years to come. Anyway, on to the exciting news. Bluesfest has just announced it's first lineup for 2009. The lineup boasts an assortment of world class local and international talent that represents the spirit of what Bluesfest is all about.

In exciting news, Ben Harper will make an exclusive appearance at Bluesfest with two special performances where he will debut his amazing new band billed as BEN HARPER & Relentless Seven. These shows are exclusive to Bluesfest, and there will be no other Ben Harper Australian festival or theatre appearances.

Along with Mr Harper, the likes of Michael Franti, Missy Higgins and John Butler Trio will be making their one and only apearance during the Bluesfest. That means they will have no sideshows and only be performing exclusive at the Bluesfest.

But along with these fine folks will be the likes of Angelique Kidjo, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Lucinda Williams, Taj Mahal, Eric Bibb, Tony Joe White, Easy All Stars, Augie March, Blue King Brown, Lior, Old Man River and many many more.

Kings of Leon announce stadium tour of Australia

Get ready people – the Kings of Leon are heading back to Australia. Following much speculation that they would be returning to our shores to play the Big Day Out, our favourite indie-southerners have confirmed they will instead be playing their first ever headline shows dowunder this March.

Also, without surprise, they will be playing the stadium/arena shows thanks to their new 'Only By The Night' stadium (U2) sounding album. All that bloody time spent on the Nova airwaves means a venue upgrade for the Nashville lads. It kills me and the rest of the staff that they have in a sense sold out. If you really are a keen fan of the Kings of Leon then you will know how bad this 4th album is compared to their first 3. If you don't know about their first 3 albums, then do yourself a really big favour and go out and listen to them somehow. Their best album is their first album 'Youth and Young Manhood', which came at a time when the boys were still chewing on hay, wore overalls and hadn't been touched by The Strokes PR department yet.

Anyway, this gig will still be great as long as they play their classics. I will say this though, there is a couple of killer tracks off their newest album such as 'Sex is On Fire' and 'Crawl', so it's not a complete disaster.

Playground Weekender 2009 lineup announced

Returning for its third year in 2009, the fabulous Playground Weekender is back once again.

Picture this - luxurious surrounds of Del Rio Riverside Resort on the banks of the Hawkesbury River, a three-day fiesta and a lineup to boogie too.

Anticipation has been steadily mounting for next year’s line-up, since the earlier announcement of The Streets headlining. So are you ready? Here’s the lineup for the 2009 Playground Weekender:

After nine years, the indomitable Primal Scream will finally return to Australia to headline the Weekender. They acclaimed the legend status with 1991 album 'Screamadelica' and have continued to build a formidable repertoire, culminating in this year’s album 'Beautiful Future'. Simply epic!

In August, California’s Cold War Kids left Splendour In The Grass with many more fans and they’ll be back to do it again at Playground. The band has just delivered an assured second album, 'Loyalty To Loyalty' and their live shows are not to be missed. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Toronto duo Crystal Castles will be bringing their messed-up electro and pop hooks to Playground. This will be an insane performance.

The goodness doesn’t stop there, though. Whomadewho are heading back to Playground after a standout set in 2007. The invite has also been extended to New Zealand collective Salmonella Dub, Melbourne’s Blue King Brown, Grafton Primary, Paper Scissors, Pomomofo, TZU and D.I.G (Directions in Groove). Then there are more DJs than you can point a needle at – among them Norman Jay, Ewan Pearson, Ashley Beedle and Tom 'friggin' Middleton. Phew. Wow. Thanks.

Ummmm......in addition to all the musical splendour and just in case you might get bored, Del Rio Resort boasts a 9-hole golf course for camping, swimming pool, beer garden, cinema and other creature comforts. Trust me, you won't want to leave.

And again, Playground Weekender first line-up:

Primal Scream
The Streets
Cold War Kids
Crystal Castles
Blue King Brown
Salmonella Dub
Soul II Soul Sound System
Grafton Primary
Nic Fanciulli
Ashley Beedle
Norman Jay
Whomadewho
TZU
D.I.G (Directions in Groove)

Girl Talk announces Australian sideshows

The once biochemical engineer, Gregg Gillis is now the full-time dj known as Girl Talk. The Pittsburgh native (Go Detroit Redwings!) has taken the ‘mash-up’ genre by the scruff of the neck and is trying to rename it the 'girl-talk' genre.

On the back of his splendid fourth album 'Feed The Animals', Girl Talk is bouncing into Australia for the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival tour. The man has also locked in three sideshows for his most hardcore fans.

A Girl Talk live show is a completely new experience – Gillis hovers over a laptop and microphone (usually half-naked!!), surrounded on all sides by sweaty revellers, as a barrage of cheesy pop, punk, classic hip hop and rock bangs out the speakers. In other words – a concert made for dancing your friggin shoes off people!

It was here only a few years ago where he played the Revolver Upstairs in Melbourne. This time he plays at The Forum in Melbourne. Things have really progressed to another level. Nevertheless, expect mayhem.

Girl Talk gets his freak on at the following sideshows this silly season.

Friday 30 January – The Forum, Sydney
Wednesday 4 February – Karova Lounge, Ballarat
Thursday 5 February – Prince Bandroom, Melbourne

The once protoge of Jack Johnson, beach loving, board-riding and guitar-strumming dude Donavon Frankenreiter is cruising back to Australia this summer. In between surfs, Frankenreiter is set to play the Falls/Southbound/Sunset Sounds trifecta and four intimate sideshows.

Unsurprisingly, Frankenreiter is quite a fan of our sunny country, having toured here numerous times in the past. Like his mates (Jack Johnson, Ben Harper), Frankenreiter likes to tour where he can surf and what better country than the wonderful Australia.

On this tour, he’s got the backing of a four-piece band and a newish album, 'Pass It Around'. Pack the spliffs and get ready to chill.

Donavon Frankenreiter plays the following sideshows. Tickets on sale Friday 21 November.

Monday 29 Dec – Prince Of Wales, Melbourne
Sun 4 Jan – The Factory Theatre, Sydney
Tues 6 Jan – Cambridge Hotel, Newcastle
Wed 7 Jan – The Beach Hotel, Byron Bay

It's no secret that he loves Australia, having two prior tours here sell out very very quickly. Coldplay to tour Australia in Feb/March

Coldplay has let slip that they will return to Australia next year. Speaking with Sydney radio station Nova over the weekend, frontman Chris Martin promised the band will “definitely” be here in February or March.

Coldplay released 'Vida La Vida or Death and All His Friends' earlier this year to a rapturous applause. They have been packing out stadiums across the world and no doubt will do the same when they hit Australia. They've toured Australia a few times, last time back in 2006, and every time their shows have sold out. Expect a repeat.

So keep hitting the Music Universe site everyday to find out exact dates and more details when they come through.

Ida Maria comes for small Australian tour

Hailing from way way way up north of the world, Norway, 23-year-old sweetheart Ida Maria is bringing herself to our shores.

The singer made her way into our heads with the addictive single 'I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked', from debut album 'Fortress Round My Heart'. From what we've heard Miss Ida Maria is most at home when in front of a crowd.

In the press kit, Maria raves about how, ““Being on stage feels natural to me in the way nothing else does. I want to live the music with my whole body. Playing live should be hard, physical work, like being a fisherman or a carpenter.” Let's hope she’s a bit more fun to watch than a carpenter.

Prepare for a night of madness when Ida Maria rolls into your town this December.

Tickets on sale Thursday 11 November.

Wednesday 17 – The Hi Fi, Melbourne
Thursday 18 – The Zoo, Brisbane
Friday 19 – Metro Theatre, Sydney

Frightened Rabbit confirmed for Woodford Folk festival

Scottish band Frightened Rabbit is confirmed to play Woodford Folk in Queensland (Dec 27 to Jan 1). It’s the first appearance in Australia by the band, which currently has its second album “The Midnight Organ Fight” out. Festival Director Bill Hauritz said 'It is rare that we would have an international act in a headlining show but when we discovered them at South by Southwest in Texas we couldn’t resist, such is their quality.”

Also appearing at the festival will be the likes of Augie March, Ash Grunwald, Bob Evans, Jackson Jackson, Josh Pyke, Lior, The Black Seeds, The Boat People, The Herd, True Live and a ridiculous amount more.

Located in between the Brisbane Valley and Queensland's beautiful Sunshine Coast Hinterland, the Woodford Folk Festival takes place in a rural valley surrounded by natural bushland with plenty of native wildlife and a superb view of the Glass House Mountains from the hill-top above the festival grounds. The festival is about an hour and a half drive north of Brisbane, or 40 minutes west of Caloundra or an hour south of Noosa.

Bon Iver Australian Tour January 2009

Handsome Tours are pleased to present the Bon Iver live show in Australia this summer.

Bon Iver (French for "good winter”) is the epitomy of beautiful. Justin Vernon, the voice behind Bon Iver, has penned a beautiful masterpiece, 'For Emma, Forever Ago', which is a nine-song album praised by critics and fans alike.

Hailed as “irresistible" by the New York Times and awarded the highly auspicious “Recommended” tag by the influential Pitchfork collective, Bon Iver’s ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ is an astonishingly striking debut release.

With nothing more than a few microphones and some aged recording equipment, the album was inadvertently created in isolation in his father’s Northern Wisconsin cabin. These homespun folk songs, largely centered upon Justin’s haunting falsetto, perfectly captured his innocence in the woods.

"A soulful and intriguing record” JMAG

"One of 2008's landmark records" MOJO (5 stars - album of the month)

"A classic debut album" UNCUT (5 stars - album of the month)

"Nine mystifying songs full of innate swells and lulls to fill a quiet room” SYDNEY MAGAZINE

15th Jan - Fly By The Night, Fremantle WA
17th Jan - The Tivoli, Brisbane QLD
18th Jan - The Hi Fi, Melbourne VIC
19th Jan - The Forum, Melbourne VIC

Tickets on sale 14th November

NB. Bon Iver will also be performing at The Sydney Festival.

Big Day Out 2nd announcement

We've all been waiting for it since the moment the first announcement was made. (click here) Who was going to be on the second announcement for Big Day Out 2009??

Well, the wait is over.

This morning the following artists were added to the Big Day Out for 2009. The frontman of System Of A Down, Mr Serj Tankjan. He recently released a solo album 'Elect The Dead' and hasn't been back to the Big Day Out stage since 2002! Look out for his awesomeness on the main stage. The old school punkers Dropkick Murphy's will be here too ripping and tearing it up. As mentioned in a previous article, Hot Chip will be performing once again. They toured the Big Day Out in 2007 and were an instant hit with the crowds. They now have three albums under their belts, so expect the dancefloor to be pumping full of classics.

Another artist who was recently here for a Big Day Out tour is back again. Lupe Fiasco will showcase his explosively cool sounds to the Australian people once more. Also, to keep those hip-hop fans smiling, turntablist Z-Trip will be hitting the decks to prove once more that he is a legend of the game.

Now, it ain't a true Big Day Out without the likes of some 'buzz' acts of the moment. The two bands on this announcement to fill that spot are The Black Kids (with their killer 'Partie Traumatic' debut album) and popular remixers Holy Ghost!

Let's not forget about the local talent. This year, the likes of The Vines, Died Pretty, The Getaway Plan, Mercy Arms, The Drones and many many more.

Big Day Out second round line-up:

Serj Tankian
Dropkick Murphys

Liam Gallagher blasts Kings of Leon

Liam Gallagher has blasted Kings of Leon for sounding like U2.

The Oasis frontman is a big fan of the Kings but feels they should have created a better album than 'Only By The Night’.

He said: "I like Kings of Leon, but I don't know about this new record. I like the old stuff, but I like his voice, you can always tell his voice when it comes on."

"But it seems to me they've gone for the bucks, man. When they first came out I was going, 'Who the f**k is this?"

"I'm not dissing them because I really like them, but it's like they've got this U2 sound and you can do better than that."

The opinionated singer also admitted there aren’t too many current groups he admires.

"The band that I like at the moment is Kasabian. They've got it - they've got the look, the tunes, they say just the right amount of stuff, they don't f***ing rub it and rub it and rub it. I like them and the Arctic Monkeys are great, but they're not rock stars."

The Prodigy tour Australia

The Prodigy are back baby!

It’s been nearly five years since The Prodigy rocked our shores and since then they’ve been one of the most requested electronic acts to return to Australia.

With the band set to blitz Big Day Out 2009, we can now we can confirm – The Prodigy are locked for two massive sideshows in Sydney and Brisbane.

During the 90s, The Prodigy came to represent everything that was anarchic and subversive about dance and rave culture, releasing two killer albums in the form of 'Music for the Jilted Generation' and 'Fat of the Land' and produced some of the most requested tracks at clubs like 'Outer Space, No Good (Start the Dance)', 'Voodoo People', 'Breathe', 'Firestarter' and 'Smack My Bitch Up'. They’re all tunes that still get a massive response even more than a decade after their release.

In 2003 The Prodigy released their most recent album 'Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned' but it was arguably a flop. Nevertheless, one thing hasn’t changed, The Prodigy are still electro kings. Known across the world for their energetic live shows, it's made them one of the most highly anticipated acts on this year’s Big Day Out lineup. With the band reportedly packing a new album’s worth of material, they’re guaranteed to make the dance floors rumble.

Catch The Prodigy at the following sideshows. Tickets on sale Friday 14th November…

Tuesday 20th Jan – Brisbane Riverstage, special guests Simian Mobile Disco & Hot Chip DJs
Saturday 24th Jan – Hordern Pavilion, Sydney

PS. Notice the guests.......not only Simian Mobile, but Hot Chip DJs!!! Does that mean Hot Chip will be on the second Big Day Out announcement????
